We wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on his Woldridge / Helyar Honda in time for our Joe’s Bar Goldrush Beach Cross and Rounds 3 & 4 of the BXUK MCF British Beach Cross Championship on 23/24th June, then Ramsgate in October.

Due to local support there will be rewards and awards for Kent based riders more to be announced next week but lots to go for.

The clouds drifted over the stadium but did not deliver any more moisture thankfully. Much had fallen unexpectedly the day before. The high winds had dried the main shale oval out nicely and the infield was moist but grippy on the unspoilt grass of the Newport Speedway stadium.

Just four small jumps were set on the infield section of the track but were adequate to change the dimension of the track and give airtime to the Quads, Mini Bikes and MX machines as they tackled the first ATE/QRA Dirt Track Cross event of the year at a venue which has only ever provided ‘wheels firmly on the shale’ oval racing.

There was a class of Dirt Track oval machines also who provided some spectacular racing with reigning ATE MCF British Dirt Track Champion Dan Berwick from Kent who was in fine form. It was great to see the event tempt former front runner Geoff Wiltshire out of retirement and the ear to ear grin certainly told the story of the day – FUN.

Back to the Dirt Track Cross and the ‘Stomp’ Mini Bike class was as ever ‘busy’. The commitment and all out elbow to elbow attacking nature of this class provided great entertainment, not just for the riders on the 160cc maximum machines but everyone watching as well.

Mark Richardson had travelled down from Boston and in practice looked as fast as ever, showing the style which took him to title honours in 2011, but this was short lived as he lost control in his first race and had to withdraw from the event with a wrist injury. This left the Welsh brothers Adam and Chris Frearson who came to their first Dirt Track Cross event with much hype and expectations to chase the ever present Luke Coker who is somewhat of a Mini Bike specialist. Luke certainly made short work of the infield section and was his usual fast paced self on the oval and came out on top after the five races.

The MX bike class had some local talent at the front with James White-Williams showing the others the way to commit a MX bike around the track. Many of the Mini Bike class riders also rode ‘man sized’ machines in the MX class and Blaine Blackwell took second step on the podium ahead of David Hughes who stole 3^rd away from another of the Mini Bike experts Gary Phelps.

In the Quad classes it was a family affair for the Davies. Daddy Davies, better known as Ed won the Adult class ahead of a very determined Danny Smith who was the man to deny Davies of a maximum of wins. One of two youngsters in the adults to shine was Luke Cooper who was in superb form and if it were not for a lanyard cutout malfunction, was on for several points extra. The other youngster to impress on his 450cc machine was the very tidy and controlled Connor Taylor who, after practice assessment raced with the adults at the tender age of 15 finishing joint fourth overall with Matt Dance.

Dafydd Davies, certainly a chip off the old block, clean swept the Youth Quad Class coming off the line with maximum attack each time. Even though this class only fielded three riders, Davies, Jordan Harris and Tom Chell they were never far apart and showed they are on the path to being future Adult champions .

Top Quad Dirt Track Cross riders already booked in include Danny Smith, Ben Richmond, Lee Baxter, Paul Bennett, Ed Giddings and Geoff Glover to name just a few. These guys are joined by the ever determined Welshman  Ed Davies who always gives 110%.

In the Mini Bikes class we have Reigning champion Mark Richardson and many guys aiming at usinng the track time to get on terms with the Boston based rider who is also making an outing on his MX bike.

Many local MX riders are taking to the Dirt Track for the first time and in the Dirt Track Oval class legends such as Eric Pike and Geoff Wiltshire will be out with British Champion an Berwick and Co for a skid around the oval.

The HANGOVER Dirt Track Cross and Dirt Track event on Sunday 22nd January 2012 at Newport International Speedway Stadium.

The track will have infield section to the traditional oval, with small jumps. There will be firm parking, bar and refreshments.

Quad Adult and Elite Youth Quads, MX Solo and Mini Bikes all taking on the Dirt Track Cross. The Solo Dirt Track Sprung and Ridged riders will ride the complete Oval only.

Lots of short sharpe snappy races at this fun season opener.
